Patient Involvement in Health Technology Assessment

New international book on patient involvement has just been published

The long-awaited second edition of the book Patient Involvement in Health Technology Assessment has now been published – and it is more relevant than ever.

The book is an international standard work that focuses on meaningful patient involvement in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) – i.e. the processes by which medicines, medical devices, digital solutions and other health technologies are assessed before being implemented in health systems.

What is the book about?

The book provides a comprehensive overview of:

    • Why patient involvement is crucial for legitimate, fair and sustainable decisions in healthcare
    • How patients and relatives can be involved in concrete terms – not symbolically, but as real contributors of knowledge
    • Methods, models and best practice for patient involvement in HTA
    • International cases and experiences from Europe, North America, Australia and low- and middle-income countries
    • The role, responsibilities and opportunities of patient organisations in HTA processes

The book is an international standard work that focuses on meaningful patient involvement in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) – i.e. the processes by which medicines, medical devices, digital solutions and other health technologies are assessed before being implemented in health systems.

This edition has a special focus on:

    • more patient authors
    • the link to the EU HTA Regulation
    • quality, governance and transparency in patient involvement

The book can also be downloaded directly via PiCC United as part of our work on knowledge sharing and capacity building in patient involvement.

The book is a joint project with contributions from experts around the world – including patient leaders, researchers, HTA practitioners and policy specialists. The common denominator is the ambition to move patient involvement from being a ‘nice to have’ to a fundamental, integrated part of HTA processes.

Why is PiCC United sharing this book?

At PiCC United, we work to ensure that patients and relatives are involved early, systematically and meaningfully – even when decisions are made at the system and policy level. This book supports that work and is an important resource for:

    • patient organisations
    • decision-makers
    • researchers
    • HTA units
    • industry and partners

We recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the quality of patient involvement in practice.

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is the systematic process by which health technologies – e.g. medicines, medical devices, digital solutions and treatment approaches – are assessed before they are recommended, financed or implemented in the healthcare system.

HTA processes typically look at:

    • Clinical effectiveness and safety
    • Patient perspectives (quality of life, experiences, needs and preferences)
    • Costs and socio-economics
    • Ethical, organisational and social consequences

The purpose of HTA is to support well-founded, transparent and fair decisions about which technologies to use – and for whom.

When patients and relatives are meaningfully involved in HTA processes, the following are increased:

    • the quality of the basis for decision-making
    • the legitimacy of the decisions
    • the likelihood that technologies will actually create value in practice
